Central Government’s media monitoring plan in limbo
New Delhi: The Union government’s media monitoring plan is in jeopardy as the Electronic Media Monitoring Centre, working under the information and broadcasting ministry does not have adequate monitoring facilities for the requisite number of channels being beamed in India.
It is understood that several channels and service providers have not supplied the Centre with the demodulators to decrypt and demodulate channel broadcast signals so that they can be monitored effectively.
The ministry has twice issued directives for submitting these decryption devices to the EMMC. It is understood that as per the second directive of the I&B ministry the broadcasters need to provide this equipment to the EMMC by August 25. Currently there are about 800 odd satellite channels operational in the country, however, the EMMC is not equipped to keep a check on half of these.
