The Airtel Hyderabad Marathon saw the participants run the marathon on a hot Sunday. But spotted cheering them on were a bunch of student volunteers posted along the route. One of the largest team of student volunteers came from St Mary’s College, Yousufguda, and runners were thankful to have them around.
Uday, a first year St Mary’s student, who completed 42.2 km, out of which 22 km he ran barefoot, says, “I have been an active participant in such events but this was my first marathon after an injury one-and-a-half-year ago. I am grateful to the the students because they were so encouraging and helped me run for over six hours.”
Ram Mohan Reddy, a final year student, was the main manager for over 156 students who volunteered from St Mary’s. “We were so enthusiastic; if the reporting time was 4 am, most of us got there by 3.30 am. We had to manage vehicular traffic and also keep refreshments ready for the runners,” he says.
