Academic city soon in Kerala
Chief Minister said the three-member team had finalised the report after visiting the Dubai Academic City
Thiruvananthapuram: The Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the proposal for setting up an academic city in the State, submitted by a three-member committee consisting of Additional Chief Secretary of Higher Education, K.M.Abraham, Kozhikode University Vice-Chancellor Abdul Salam and Planning Board Member G.Vijayaraghavan.
The State Government will also form a regulatory body called Academic City Regulatory Authority and CIAL- model company- International City of Kerala Limited - under the Higher Education Department.
The Government will have 26 per cent share in the company which will be formed on public-private-partnership.
Three sites have been shortlisted for the project…one, near the Kerala University campus, another, near the proposed Knowledge City at Thonakkal and a spot near the Calicut University campus. One of these spots will be finalised after a proper study.
The Chief Minister said the three-member team had finalised the report after visiting the Dubai Academic City in December , 2012. They were convinced that a similar one could be set up in the State, he said.
There are 43,000 students from 137 countries studying in more than 400 different educational programmes at the Dubai Academic City. A seven-member team of highly qualified experts from various fields of education would be included in the regulatory authority. The authority will have a chairman of outstanding repute.
It was also decided to conduct road shows to popularise the academic city. The committee has also called for global education meets every year to popularise the State as a global education destination.
