Beef ‘touchings’ in Kerala bars may soon disappear
Kerala is one of the states with the most beef eaters
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With bars closing down, the demand for beef, a much sought after ‘touching’ with tipplers, is likely to come down. Already, the sale of beef had suffered a dip following the closure of 418 bar hotels. The situation will turn from bad to worse when 292 bars too close by September12.
Kerala is one of the states with the most beef eaters. The annual meat consumption in the State is estimated to be around 12 lakh tonnes, a major chuck of which is beef. According to the State Animal Husbandry Department, the total meat production in the State is 4.8 lakh tonnes.
The remaining around 7 lakh tonnes come from other states, mainly Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
“Obviously, there will be a dip in the sale of meat in the coming months owing to the closure of bars,” said Meat Products of India managing director M.Suresh Kumar.
C.Antony, a leading meat seller in the city, said there had been a dip in sale since April following the closure of bars.
He said those involved in illegal slaughtering would be the worst hit as most of them used to supply beef to bars, whereas those who sold meat with due permission might survive with demand from individual customers going steady.
