Spot of trouble: Three minute walk turned into a nightmare
It happened again. Student describes attack few feet away from the Eflu gate
Hyderabad: On Saturday, a three-minute walk for a group of Eflu students turned into a nightmare when one of the girls was pushed and groped. The incident took place just 10 feet away from the university gate and her screams went unanswered.
The victim, Sanskriti agreed to speak about the incident to ensure that this recurring menace stops. She recalls: “There were seven of us, including three boys. We were walking to the university from a friend’s place at around 1 am. We split into smaller groups as we walked. And before we knew it, these three guys were following us.”
“One of them caught me off guard, pushed me to the ground, touched me inappropriately and groped me just 10 feet away from the gate. I was screaming, but no help came from inside.”
Tanya, who was walking with another friend ahead of the victim, noticed the stalkers earlier. “They started following us, so we crossed the road. That’s when they cornered the girls behind us. And when the guys who were walking with us tried to catch them, all three ran in different directions. Also, they had a person on a bike accompanying them who helped them speed away,” says Tanya.
To avoid further incidents, the students went to the police station. “We went to the police to request for additional security and more night patrolling. They have assured us that steps will be taken soon.”
What’s disturbing is the fact that these incidents have been frequently reported over the years. The vicinity around the university is a hotbed for miscreants as it gets deserted past 10 pm, when all the stores shut and street vendors leave.
“Also, there are no residential buildings nearby. So even if you are calling for help, it is not likely that anyone will come to your rescue,” adds Sanskriti.
“We couldn’t book a case as we failed to note down the number of the bike,” adds Tanya, who believes that the cops are the ones who should be able to help them. “The incident happened outside the campus. There is nothing that the college can do.”
Sanskriti is still irked by the lack of action. “A friend and I went out again on Tuesday night at 10 pm and there was no security,” she says.
Inspector Subash Babu of the Osmania Police Station, however, has assured that the students’ request is already being worked on. “Our people are on patrol regularly. And the students need not worry as the police assures 24 hour protection. We are already planning additional forces for patrolling near Eflu as soon as the Ganesha festivities are done.”
