Manipur misses own girl’s biopic
Ban on screening of Hindi movies not lifted for native girl
Guwahati: While boxing champion M.C. Mary Kom’s biopic was released all over India on Friday, her native state Manipur missed the movie with no theatre daring to resist dictate of separatists banning screening of Hindi movie in the state. Even state administration looked indifferent and no excitement was visible for the movie in the frontier state.
Mary's family, including her husband and parents, saw the movie on Wednesday at a special screening in New Delhi only.
Sixteen people from Manipur, including Mary’s family members, Priyanka Chopra, Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar and other VIPs attended the screening. Mary’s husband Onler Kom, who arrived in Imphal on Thursday, in his reaction said, he loved the film. However, excitement for the film was quite visible in other northeastern states with Assam government exempting the film from entertainment tax.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in his reaction said, “The movie is on boxer Mary Kom, the pride of the northeast and the country as a whole, so we have decided to exempt it from entertainment tax.”
Assam is the third state to have made the film tax-free after Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, a large number of sports persons from Manipur chose to see the film outside the state. Some of them extended their stay in Guwahati just to see the film in Guwahati theatre. The film was released in all the northeastern states except Manipur on Friday.
