Dandiya fever grips Hyderabad
It’s that time of the year again when you take out those sticks and get ready for dandiya
Hyderabad: City enthusiasts are putting their best foot forward by attending the dandiya workshops happening around town a good one month before the nine-day festival.
While a few might think it’s too early, it seems dandiya fans in the city don’t mind starting the sessions this soon because they want to be perfect. “If someone had been to a dandiya event last year, couldn’t dance well, but promised to be better this year, we help them make good of that promise. We are organising weekend workshops in Madhapur and will soon start a 10-day workshop in Himayatnagar,” says Ram, artistic director of Ram’s Step Up Dance Company.
Head instructor for Ram’s company, Nisarg Shah, says that his batch at Madhapur is already full. “The craze for dandiya just keeps getting bigger and bigger in the city. One batch is already full and for the next workshop that starts this Thursday, we are hoping for around 35-40 participants.”
And Sanjay MJ, a choreographer, says that the trend is changing every year. “Earlier we used to go to family gatherings where they all wanted to learn dandiya together. But now, even a group of friends are willing to take part in a dandiya workshop so that they dance well and have fun in those nine days.”
Talking about why she signed up classes, Sunanda Bonugu, an IT professional, explains, “It’s about getting the technicalities of the dance right. I also want to take part in the competitions.”
