A large number of farmers led by Rythu Sangham leader D. Gopinath rushed to the house of the minister
GUNTUR: The Bengal gram farmers of Prakasam and Guntur district gheroaed the house of minister for agriculture Prattipati Pulla Rao on Sunday in Chilakaluripeta demanding purchase of Bengal gram by the government for Rs 5,000 per quintal.
A large number of farmers led by Rythu Sangham leader D. Gopinath rushed to the house of the minister in Pandaripuram Colony. They said that 20 days ago they had met Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in Hyderabad and explained their difficulties and the CM had assured about resolving their issues but in vain.
The farmers lamented that they have taken loans from banks to cultivate Bengal gram and further stored the stocks in cold storage seeking fair price but of no use. They alleged that banks are warning about auctioning stored Bengal gram stocks on September 25 for the failure of repayment of loans.
They rued that nearly 17 lakh quintals of Bengal gram stocks were stored in cold storages in Prakasam district and nearly 10 lakh quintals in Guntur district. They feared that farmers would become penniless if banks auction their stocks. The farmers demanded the purchase of the stocks by the government.
