Coimbatore: Coimbatore’s notorious rowdy, ‘Gym’ Hakkim has been sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment besides 37 years of jail term for raping, kidnapping and criminally intimidating a college student in 2008.
The long arm of law finally caught up with the dreaded rowdy who has 13 cases of murder, attempt to murder, rape, dacoity and criminal intimidation pending against him in Coimbatore.
Delivering the sensational judgement on Tuesday, the Mahila Court Judge M.P. Subramaniam also ordered Hakkim to pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the rape victim and Rs 43,000 as fine.
The Judge also awarded 36 years of rigorous imprisonment for Hakkim’s four associates and a fine of Rs 42,000 each. “Punishment has to match the crime. Hence, the court awards life term for the accused who has committed a more grave crime than murder,” the Judge concluded.
The kidnap and rape of a 24-year-old MBA student from the Coffee Day shop as she was sipping coffee along with her friend D Anand alias Anand Jones from Sarojini Nagar at Thudiyalur, on November 21, 2008 sent shock waves in the tranquil Coimbatore city.
The MBA student had won the first prize in the college for the documentary film she made with help from Anand, a businessman in Thudiyalur. She had invited Anand for a treat at Coffee day on Race Course in the city on November 21, 2008 at 8.30 pm. But the celebration ended in filmi-style kidnap, rape and assault.
Hakkim who was standing near the Coffee Day shop, spotted the young friends and sent his accomplice Karthik to threaten them. Karthik posed as a cop and threatened Anand and his friend.
Meanwhile Hakkim and his associates intervened and offered to help them. However, Hakkim kidnapped them in Anand’s car and took them to a dilapidated building in Kadambadi village near Sulur.
Hakkim raped the girl and along with six accomplices, K George Kingsley, 36, from Tirupur, A Mohammed Aniz, 38, S Manikandan, 24, from Podanur, S Kathik alias Karthikeyan, 30, from Rathinapuri, S Miga Prakash, 30, from Theni district, and S Anandaraj, videographed the girl in obscene postures and tried to extort Rs. 5 lakh in cash from them.
While an accused Manikandan committed suicide during the trial, S Anandaraj is absconding. Reacting to the judgement, the special public prosecutor, R Sarojini, said that she was happy that the offenders have been punished to the full extent of the law.
