Cases against stone pelters at Swamy’s Santhome home

City police registered cases against suspected AIADMK cadres, for stone pelting near Subramaniam Swamy’s residence

Chennai: Based on the complaint of an armed reserve police constable, who was injured in violence over the weekend, the city police registered cases against persons, suspected to be AIADMK cadres, for stone pelting near BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy’s residence in Chennai.

The police, however, are yet to arrest them. “We have identified a few from the Foreshore Estate area to be behind the attack and have launched a hunt for them,” a police official said.

Police sources said that the constable, Sakthi Manikandavel, 25, who was on duty near Swamy’s residence on Sunday, was injured when an unidentified gang pelted stones at the security personnel there. Sakthi was treated for his injuries at the Government Royapettah Hospital and discharged on Monday after which he lodged a complaint with the Mylapore police.

“The cadres raised obscene slogans, blocked the road and started pelting stones directed at Swamy’s residence,” an official on duty there recalled.

In a similar incident on Saturday, a Friends of Police (FoP) volunteer, Kumar, 35, who was helping the police in security operations was also injured, the official added.

On Saturday, as news of the conviction of AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa broke out, angry cadres stormed their way to the BJP leader’s residence on Papanasan Sivan Salai off Santhome High Road, raising slogans against him.

A few of the members pelted stones at Mr Subramanian Swamy’s bungalow, unmindful of the fact that neither the politician nor any of his family members were home.
