‘Love Hindi films but not Indian soaps’
Pakistani heartthrob Mohib Mirza who features in Yeh Shaadi Nahi Ho Sakti is having a hard time trying to win his lover’s hand in marriage on the show — an experience not very different from his real life ordeal, he tells us. “Until a few years ago, acting wasn’t even considered a real profession. My father-in-law is a successful pharmacist and didn’t approve of my line of work. I had to try very hard to convince him that I will take good care of his daughter. Then one day I looked him in the eye and told him, ‘she used to be your responsibility, now she’s mine,’. We got married soon after.”
The actor admits that it’s a great feeling to be able to perform for audiences across the border. “It feels great. All my life I’ve been watching Indian films and have always been fascinated by the Indian actors. For the longest time, I used to feel bad that Indian viewers cannot appreciate Pakistani pop culture. In fact, I used to send DVDs to my Indian friends so they knew about the kind of work we do.”
Telling us about the show Yeh Shaadi Nahi Ho Sakti Mohib says, “I have been doing serious shows for a long time, so this show was a relief. It was shot during Ramzaan, so it has a festive background.”
Mohib admits that he has watched his share of Indian shows, but makes no bones about the fact that he can’t bear them. He says, “Mujhse nahi bardasht hota. My family watches these shows and I catch a bit of it, but due to the loud background music, half the things are killed. Pakistani stories move fast, but Indian shows show the same thing for weeks together.”
