Ongole: Out of 6,867 engineering seats in 17 engineering colleges 2,942 seats remained vacant in the district due to lack of demand, in the backdrop of sub-standard infrastructure in colleges, faculty and delay in the commencement of Eamcet counselling forced the students to take admission in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Punjab for quality education and better communication skills to get campus selections.
Nearly 43 per cent of seats are vacant in various engineering colleges in the district. Highly-placed sources said that over 75,000 engineering seats are vacant in 326 engineering colleges in AP.
Parents having good financial background are opting for deemed universities for quality education and campus selections in AP. Some of the parents are admitting their sons and daughters in the VIIT, Satyabhama College of Engineering, Pratyusha Engineering College, Lovely University Engineering College in Punjab for quality education.
The parents felt that though the fee is high, they offer quality education and children will get good communication skills which help them to get campus selections.
Prakasam Engineering College principal, Prof. M. Lakshmana Rao said, “Software companies are not getting projects as earlier. As a result, the companies are offering less salary to the software engineers. The top software companies which offered Rs 40,000 per month for freshers are now offering Rs 20,000 month. As a result, the students are not showing interest to join in EEE, ECE and CSE courses as earlier.”
An engineering college professor who wanted to maintain anonymity said, “Some colleges are surviving on M. Tech admissions, but students are not coming to classes. They are doing jobs. Most of the students studying M. Tech course are doing private jobs. They are paying fees to the colleges.”
“Engineering colleges in which admissions are bel-ow hundred are engaging the PROs to get admissions. They are offering Rs 10,000 commission per seat to the PRO. If the same situation continues, engineering colleges in crisis are likely to be closed,” he added.
