‘No time to celebrate’

Home for Bakrid, Sania Mirza talks about her life, tennis and more
Hyderabad: Sania Mirza is always on her toes, be it on the tennis court or off it. Playing on the ceaseless professional circuit means she has to be away from home most of the time. She has gone through birthdays in the family as well as festivals all by herself, in foreign lands. This Bakrid she got lucky though, and managed to make it home just in time.
“I am not home for most of the Ids,” she complains. “This is actually by chance because I thought the final in Beijing would be on Sunday, but luckily it was played on Saturday night,” she adds. “I have not had a minute to celebrate the Asian Games Gold, Bronze or the US Open title.
“As tennis players we are competing 30 weeks a year. We don’t have time to mourn losses, we don’t have time to celebrate victories. The day after I won the Asian Games gold, I was in a different country playing another tournament. The last couple of months have been very hectic. I am looking forward to a good break after the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore this month.”
The busy schedule also meant she missed her cricketer-husband Shoaib Malik perform in the Champions League Twenty20 tournament here. “Yeah, I watched his innings on my computer in Beijing,” she says remorsefully. “Sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. You are on national duty.”
Sania is strapped with regional duties as well. “I am proud to be the brand ambassador of Telangana. It’s been quite lucky for me, I have won quite a lot after that,” she says.
“When the whole controversy (of appointing her Telangana brand ambassador) broke out, people were asking me ‘You can’t stay out of the news can you?’ One of my ex-mixed doubles partner, Tecau Horia, asked me ‘What happened? Did someone gift you a state?’ It was just funny. But that was the whole point of it right? For people to know what Telangana really was. I think we are achieving that goal,” she giggles.
