Modi gets ‘three cheers’ from Election Commission, High Court, local court

Ahmedabad: It was indeed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s day on Friday as he managed to get away with three cases against him.

While the Gujarat high court set aside the state government’s notification of constituting an inquiry commission to probe the alleged snooping on a woman architect in 2009, a local court turned down a plea for issuance of notice to Mr Modi for allegedly hiding information about his marital status in an election affidavit in 2012 Assembly election.

These breathers were coupled with Election Commission’s declaration that Mr Modi’s October 3 radio broadcast did not constitute violation of the model code of conduct.

In the first case, Justice Paresh Upadhyay quashed the notification under which the two-member commission of retired Justice Sugnya Bhatt and former IAS officer K.C. Kapoor was formed to look into the snooping, allegedly at the behest of Mr Modi, then CM of Gujarat.

The affidavit case was dismissed as the magisterial court had not started the legal process under Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) Section 204 in the case.

The EC too in its order said that it “did not find anything wrong” in Mr Modi’s ‘mann ki baat’ address on AIR ahead of the October 15 polls.
