Collecting food for the furry friends
Activists in the city are on a drive to feed the cyclone-hit animals in Vizag
City group Adopt an Animal has joined hands with Vizag-based Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals (VSCPA) to help the animals affected by Cyclone Hudhud. “Approximately 700 dogs and 200 cats were affected by the cyclone and are being taken care of at a shelter home in Vizag. The shelter home requires a lot of funds and help right now. Roofs of the shelters, which are in a bad state need to be repaired, food for dogs and cats are not available easily and with the limited supply an exorbitant amount is being charged for these products. It’s not even a small group around 900 dogs and cats need to be taken care of,” says 19-year-old Shruti Darak from Adopt an Animal — Hyderabad.
Five volunteers from the city, Hari Pavan Akkina, Zabi Khan, Anas Khan, Shyam Upadhya and Shruti together have collected 120 kg of food in 36 hours. “We started spreading the word through friends, family and Facebook and have so far collected around 90 kg of dog food and 30 kg of cat food. We are asking people to donate just one kg of dog or cat food each, which will not cost them more than Rs150 for dog food and Rs 300 for cat food. Those who can’t donate food, can log on to vscpa.org to donate the money directly to the shelter,” adds Shruti.
The dog and cat food collected till Sunday will be sent via buses to Vizag and VSCPA in Vizag will co-ordinate for the same. “We need ample amount of food to take care of the animals in the shelter. We are aiming to collect at least 300 kg of food till Sunday. I hope more Hyderabadis contribute for the same, as the amount is really less and the animals back there need care and attention,” she adds.
