Serial burglar held for woman murder
Accused detained thrice under Goondas Act
Coimbatore: A serial burglar, who had robbed around 300 sovereigns of gold in a string of 27 robberies, has been nabbed in connection with the murder of a 60-year-old woman at Kovilpalayam, near the City.
The accused, Selvaraj (49), detained under the Goondas Act thrice in the past, was picked up from Palani. He is a native of Radhapuram, near Kamudhi, in Ramanathapuram district, said the police.
On September 18, the accused had allegedly attacked Shyamala (60) and her husband Meenakshi Sundaram, 65, with a log and robbed a 2.5 sovereigns gold chain from the elderly woman at their residence at Lakshmi Garden in Kovilapalayam.
The woman died in the attack. The acccused had entered into the house by removing the window grill.
The Coimbatore district superintendent of police, Mr M. Sudhakar, said the accused Selvaraj was an expert at unobtrusively removing the grill windows and frames.
After removing the grill, he would sneak into the house and commit the burglary. He has been involved in 23 cases of robbery and dacoity in rural Coimbatore, one in Coimbatore city, two in Tirupur and in Erode.
The police had recovered 173 sovereigns of gold jewels and seized weapons from him, he said. Between 2010 to 2013, he had attempted to reform by running a grocery shop and eatery.
However, he had failed to make profits and slipped back into crime, said the police.
