CM Oomen Chandy rues focus on university incidents

Programmes are being implemented to attract even foreign students
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday lashed out at people who were only speaking about the unrest in universities and ignoring the other side programmes and policies being adopted for improving education facilities in the state.
When asked about series of agitations taking place in universities, Mr Chandy said similar problems had happened in the past also. “Unfortunately people are focussing more on such problems and conveniently ignoring the positive developments taking place in the education sector.
While 500 colleges were made autonomous elsewhere in the country, Kerala had none. Now steps have been taken to ensure we get autonomous status for at least some institutions. Similarly, programmes are being implemented to attract even foreign students to Kerala making it a educational hub for higher education,'' the chief minister added.
On Calicut University Vice Chancellor's offer to quit, the chief minister said; I did meet me. But I would not like to disclose what transpired between us.
He said the state was lagging behind in the higher education sector and steps were being taken to address this problem. On Congress led unions being in the forefront in organising such agitations in universities, the Chief Minister quipped; “That's why I said there is no political differences when it comes to such issues. However, I am not naming any organisation.”
When asked about issues related to qualification of vice chancellors, the chief minister declined to give a direct replay and just said “people should also see the other side.”
