Chennai’s Swachh drive at Royapettah today

The public response is very encouraging

Chennai: Chennai’s biggest ‘Swachh’ campaign is happening in Royapettah on Tuesday.

“We are cleaning up the entire neighbourhood near the post office in Royapettah, which is among the filthiest places in South Chennai. Please be there at three in the evening,” implored Ms Parveen Papa, chairperson of FLO, the ladies organisation of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

The FICCI Ladies Organisation is spearheading this clean-up programme as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan that has become a household name across the country after its launch by PM Narendra Modi on Gandhi Jayanti, October 2.

“Though this campaign is primarily by the FLO, we are hoping that all sections of the public will join us in cleaning up the city, beginning with Royapettah. Unless we combine our efforts and sustain this passion to keep our surroundings clean, the city, the state, the country, are not going to get cleaned. This is not just the PM’s project, it is the people’s mission,” Ms Papa told DC.

“We are quietly cleaning up our surroundings in Kotturpuram. The public response is very encouraging. It just shows we all want to live in clean surroundings but have not been doing much to ensure that till now,” pointed out Ms Zubeida Asgar Ali Dhala, a prominent FLO member.
