Hyderabad: The Centre’s ambitious scheme for increasing enrolment of girl students for engineering courses doesn’t seem to have evoked much enthusiasm. Very few applications have so far been received by schools in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, forcing the extension of the last date.
The CBSE this year introduced the Udaan scheme for girl students in Classes XI and XII to provide them with coaching for engineering entrance exams. Selected students would also be offered tablet computers. About 1,000 students, 500 from open category and 500 from SC, ST and Backward Classes, would be selected.
A centre coordinator in Warangal said they had received only five applications so far while an official in Hyderabad said the number was small. D. Sudha Madhavi, principal, Sree Venkateswara Bala Kuteer in Guntur said, “We have received about 30 to 40 applications so far but the last date has been extended to November 4.”
Surprisingly, the CBSE has termed families with an income of Rs 6 lakh as financially weak and eligible for the scheme. However, the government itself had stated in the past that families with an annual income of less than Rs 1 lakh would be categorised as economically weak.
