House of age-old artefacts
MP Jithender Reddy’s home is all about living in the style of yore
‘Old is gold’, a cliché that never gets stale when it comes to Member of Parliament A.P. Jithender Reddy’s palatial residence in Nandagiri Hills. The 1,200 square-yard house was built in 2002 and at present houses 10 members. The view is to die for; there are three floors and a basement, 10 rooms and the house is big enough to accommodate 400 to 500 guests at a time. “Tradition is the true essence of the house,” explains Rishika, Jithender Reddy’s daughter-in-law.
“The colours used are neutral, and the antique furniture made from teak wood is over 20 years old. The construction of the house started in 1999, the family moved in 2002. In fact, some of the furniture was bought way before 1999. I was married into the family four years ago, and trust me, when I say that the décor has almost been the same for the past 12 years, apart from some renovations,” she says.
There are two big halls, two TV rooms; one meeting hall, one puja room and the rest are bedrooms. Interestingly, the projector room is also known as the ‘Devdas room’. “It’s because of the antique drapery and the natural light that lends the room a very ‘Devdas’ kind of a look,” laughs Rishika. The artefacts are collected from all over world and some of the paintings are from Jaipur and Ooty. There is a mix-and-match with the souvenirs the family members picked up on their many travels.
“My father-in-law, Jithender Reddy, also had a construction business in Muscat for 25 years, so a lot of things are from there. There is a pure silver plate, the kind that the royalty would eat from in Muscat, which adorns the dining room. The chandelier, too, is from the same place and is 25 years old,” she says.
While entering the house, one can also spot a peculiar looking pole. “The pole is used to ward off the evil eye. When you look at it you are distracted, because it is so very different from the rest of the house, and that’s how the house is protected from the evil eye,” explains Mithun, Rishika’s husband.
