Chennai: The Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee, which submitted its IPL fixing and betting report on Monday, seems to have dropped a bombshell. According to reports, the probe committee has mentioned the name of a key Indian player for having links with illegal bookies and fixers. The report hinted that the player under scanner was part of the 2011 World Cup winning squad.
The apex court-appointed panel had expanded the scope of the probe by including match fixing in one-day international games apart from the IPL matches. Reports suggested that the player wasn’t a part of the two teams that are under the scanner (Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals). The player is currently not a regular in the Indian squad, but was a big draw for his IPL side.
According to the report, the investigators found out a three-year-old tape that clearly indicated towards a match fixing incident that couldn’t work Apart from CSK players who were interrogated about the role of Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of ICC chairman N. Srinivasan and suspended BCCI chief, the Mudgal panel believed to have met a few other prominent players.
Meanwhile, the apex court will deliberate on the findings on November 10 which could determine if Srinivasan can seek re-election as president of the Indian board. If Gurunath’s alleged links with bookies is proved, it will also make it difficult for CSK to escape termination.
