‘I feel like a South heroine now’

Sonakshi Sinha will make her Tamil debut opposite Rajinikanth in Lingaa
In this age of cookie-cutter heroines with stock responses, Sonakshi Sinha is rather refreshingly real and different. As the feisty actress gets set to make her big South debut opposite superstar Rajinikanth in Lingaa, we catch up with her for an exclusive interview. Sonakshi says that she couldn’t have thought of a better launch in the South than K.S. Ravikumar’s Lingaa. “I’ve been getting offers ever since Dabangg released, but I couldn’t make time because of my commitments in Bollywood…which is why I had to back out of Viswaroopam too. But then Lingaa happened and everything fell in place.”
“The script, the team, Rajinikanth, A.R. Rahman’s music, and my character were all extremely appealing and this was too good an opportunity to let go off. I didn’t think twice before I signed the project,” she adds.Sonakshi will be playing Rajini’s love interest in the film, which is set both in the contemporary and British era. “I’m cast opposite Rajinikanth in the 1940’s backdrop. It’s a very rural character and I’m clad in the traditional pre-independence Tamil attire.”

Sonakshi, who had to mouth some heavy Tamil dialogues, says understanding the language wasn’t very difficult. She says (with an accent), “Ippo enaku Tamil konjam konjam theriyum (I now know a little bit of Tamil),” adding, “I have worked with a lot of South Indian directors and technicians, so I’m quite comfortable with the basic tone, which is why I often feel like a South Indian heroine now.” She also adds that the industry here is more organised. “I wish Bollywood was as disciplined as the South. Here, everyone is on the sets on time and there’s no special treatment or lenience and things work as per the schedule.”
Ask her if she was apprehensive of being overshadowed by Rajini in the film, she says, “Not at all… Also, I made my debut with another superstar, Salman Khan, and got appreciated for my role despite his presence.”
