Woman who pretended to be ‘god’, held
She collected lakhs of rupees and gold on the pretext of performing pooja
Hyderabad: The North Zone police arrested a woman for allegedly cheating a person while pretending to be possessed by a goddess. Police said she had been at it for years and had gypped a trader of lakhs of rupees.
Police identified the woman as Kusum Sowdhai, 52, a rag-picker from Chital Basthi in Khairatabad. She is a native of Nagpur, Maharashtra. According to the North Zone police officials, Kusum who came to the city in 1979 along with her husband claimed to have supernatural powers and could heal any ailment.
One S.R. Satish Kumar, 47, a trader staying at Oxford Enclave, SD Road, often fell ill. On a friend’s advice, he approached Kusum, who told him that some persons had performed black magic on him and that he had to perform poojas to be rid of the influence.
Police said over the years, she collected lakhs of rupees and gold and silver jewellery from the trader on the pretext of performing pooja and threatened him into silence. The matter finally went to the police who booked cases and recovered about 250 grams of gold from her possession.
