Changi airport to become lifestyle destination
Singapore airport wants to make people rethink the way they travel
Hyderabad: Last November, Singapore’s Changi Airport Group broke ground for Terminal 4 (T4). A month later, it announced construction of an iconic lifestyle complex, Project Jewel, which will also expand T1. In August, this year, plan of a fifth terminal was also announced.
T4 and Project Jewel together is expected to increase the passenger movement to 85 million per annum from the current 16 million. The larger aim of these infrastructure projects, besides getting more passengers to Singapore for either trade or tourism, is to help them rethink the way they travel.
During a media familiarisation tour of the Changi airport, the officials said, “A passenger should feel first class when he lands at our airport or goes around. We wish to make the Changi airport a lifestyle destination.”
At the moment, the “Changi Experience” offers 350 retail and service stores, more than 120 food and beverage outlets, 550 free Internet kiosks, 880 charging points, and even chance to be millionaire by participating in its ‘Be a Changi Millionaire’ grand draw.
The airport has also consciously retained the “tropical nature of Singapore city” in its design. Another aspect of the Changi airport’s “Rethink Travel” will be the self-service.
As part of T4’s FAST (fast and seamless travel) initiatives, passengers will be offered kiosks to get through the check-in, bag drop, immigration clearance and departure gate boarding by themselves.
Airlines operating from the Changi, such as Tige-rair, also offers lucrative options, such as Tiger-connect. Its airport transfer feature offers ease for onward journeys without the need to clear arrival immigration and retrieve luggage.
