165 photographers take part in wildlife expo

‘Click Your Pic 2014’, an annual national wildlife photography expo
Coimbatore: A snake gobbling up a fish, two mynahs perching on a wild boar amidst lush green pasture and a peacock with its feathers spread out in myriad colours are the pick of the ‘Click Your Pic 2014’, an annual national wildlife photography expo, at Brooke Field mall in Coimbatore.
Organised by the Environmental Conservation Group (ECG), the expo which will be on till November 19, offers an insight into the different species of flora and fauna across the country.
Aimed at creating awareness on Indian biodiversity, species and habitats, the event, ‘Beauty in Biodiversity’, turned out to be a platform to recognise talented photographers.
The expo had images of endangered species with information on biodiversity. Photos were displayed under categories like amphibians, reptiles and mammals, birds, insects and plants.
“A total of 165 photographers from across India besides those from Bangladesh and the UK have displayed their works at the expo,” said Mr R. Mohammed Saleem of ECG. Renowned wildlife photographer T.N.A. Perumal, who inaugurated the expo, said photography is an efficient tool to take the message of conservation of wildlife and nature to people.
The eminent photographer also had a word of advice for budding photographers. “Do not disturb an-imals under the pretext of photographing them. You photographers should note that the welfare of the subject is more important than your click. Photographers should set high standards in photography,” he said.
Pointing out that tigers, other wild animals and birds get more attention, Mr Perumal said the entire eco-system of wildlife, including even butterflies, frog and spiders should be captured by photographers.
“Coimbatore is slowly turning into a hub for photography and several people are taking to photography, which itself is a positive step towards nature conservation,” he said. Winners of the photography contest will be awarded prizes next week.
A drawing contest on the theme of Indian nature and wildlife was also held for school students to mark Children’s Day. Winners of the drawing contest, which was categorised into three groups classes 3-5, classes 6-8 and classes 9-12 were given prizes while other participants received certificates of participation.
