Cabinet for retaining water level at 136 feet
Special meeting of the cabinet reviewed the situation arising out of the rising water level
Thiruvananthapuram: A special meeting of the cabinet on Saturday reviewed the situation arising out of the rising water level in Mullaperiyar dam which has caused anxiety among the people residing downstream. The meeting decided to utilise legal channels to apprise the apex court of the situation. The state government has requested that the water level be retained at 136 feet till the completion of the maintenance work of all shutters. Of the 13 spillway shutters, two were not functioning and there are also apprehensions about others causing worry to the people.
The state government is not happy with the functioning of the High-Power Monitoring Committee. It pointed out that there was still no clarity about the committee’s powers and functioning. Despite Kerala’s request for an urgent meeting, the committee has not responded clearly indicating that it is acting in a partisan manner. Though the Supreme Court had allowed Tamil Nadu to raise the water level to 142 feet, the state government had filed a review petition in July raising safety concerns.
