Cricket ball-sized tumour removed from man’s chest
The operation was conducted at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital
Chennai: A rare tumor of the size of a cricket ball located at a critical position in the chest was successfully removed from a 39-year-old man of Gudalur in Nilgiris district at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Chennai. M H Faizal, accountant in a private company, suffered continuous severe fever with his temperature constantly remaining at 104 degrees since August end this year.
Faizal says, “I went to many hospitals in my hometown and then went to the government hospital in Coimbatore where the full fever test protocol was followed and everything tested negative. Finally, a CT scan was taken, and a 450 gram tumour found in the chest.”
HoD of the department of surgical gastroenterology (RGGGH) Dr S.M. Chandramohan says, “The tumour was found to be close to the heart, food pipe, lungs, aorta, pulmonary veins, eosophagus and bigger blood vessels and nerves. Removing the tumour without affecting these organs was a big challenge.” Doctors say that one in one lakh persons has this cyst, but only 7 per cent suffer health complications due to this.
Chandramohan said that the patient arrived at the hospital on October 28 and was operated by a team of doctors from the the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Cardiothoracic, Anaesthesia on November 6. Faizal adds that the treatment would cost about Rs 4.5 lakh in other hospitals, but the RGGGH conducted it free of cost.
