Mary Kom’s boxing academy gets financial muscle
Edelweiss Tokio Life Insurance Company Limited gave Mary Kom a cheque of Rs 5 lakh
Mumbai: Mary Kom’s proposed boxing academy in Imphal received a financial boost after Edelweiss Tokio Life Insurance Company Limited gave her a cheque of Rs 5 lakh as part of the company’s initiative towards creating ‘Champions for the Future’ here in Mumbai. “Support of the sponsors is very important for getting medals and producing champions. Through my academy I will be trying to not only produce boxers from Manipur but from all over India,” said the star boxer.
“Women’s boxing is becoming tougher with more and more competition at the Olympic Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games,” said the Manipuri star who was accompanied by her husband Onler while receiving the cheque.
The five-time amateur boxing world champion won the 51kg Asian Games gold medal in Incheon last month, making a comeback after an 18-month injury layoff. The mother of three is still grappling with injuries but is hopeful of recovering in time to qualify for the Rio Olympics, which may turn out to be her last outing.
