iOS 8.1.1 on iPhone 4s: Fast, but could be better
Apple’s latest operating system, the iOS 8 has faced a lot of scrutiny when it comes to its performance, the bugs and glitches. The new iOS 8 is compatible with iPhone and iPad models going back to 2011, which includes the iPhone 4s and above, the iPad 2 and above and the iPod Touch 5.
However, the new operating system hasn’t been a very good experience for people using the iPhone 4s and the iPad 2, the oldest devices running on the operating system. The iPhone 4s and iPad 2 running on iOS 8 saw various performance issues. The iOS 8 update did not do much good either, the two devices became significantly slower, and the app took much longer to launch than usual. The user interface was often seen to be jerky and inconsistent.
The recent software update, the iOS 8.1.1, however, addressed the issues with the iPhone 4s and iPad 2. The update includes customary bug fixes and improves the performance on the iPhone 4s and iPad 2.
Although the iOS 8.1.1 improved many issues with the two devices, but there are plenty of issues that still haven’t been tackled in the software update. The devices still lack responsiveness and consistency.
ArsTechnica, did a test to examine the app loading time of the two devices. The table below represents the statistics from the test:
(To get the complete idea of how the testing was done, please refer to ArsTechnica)
According the statistics given in the table above, the Apple A5-based devices, got about 30% slower with the iOS 8 update and revived about 20% of the speed (as compared to iOS 8.0) with the iOS 8.1.1 update. Which essentially means, that the user experience hardly changed for the iPhone 4s and iPad 2 users. App loading on these devices still takes as much time as it took under iOS 7.1.
We can now only hope that Apple rolls in a few more improvement for the older devices in the next update.
