BJP gets 70 Lakh cadres in a month

The BJP is focusing more on northeastern states, West Bengal and southern states

New Delhi: The BJP is leaving no stone unturned to make sure that its membership drive achieves the target of 10 crore. In less than a month, since it was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, more than 70 lakh members have registered with the Saffron party.

The BJP is focusing more on northeastern states, West Bengal and southern states. Launched on November 1, the membership drive, “Sashakt Bhajpa, sashakt Bharat (strong BJP, strong India)”, will continue till March 31.

With most of its leaders now gone tech-savvy at the insistence of Mr Modi, the membership drive is also technology-oriented and one could become a member by sending an SMS on the toll-free number and then registering online.

“Our membership drive has redefined the idea of political recruitment... it is mass-oriented, democratic and inclusive,” said party’s national vice-president Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, who is also the co-incharge of the party’s membership drive panel.

The party is coming up with innovative ideas like celebrating a particular day with a theme to woo a particular segment of people.

Like BJP patriarch A.B. Vajpayee’s birthday on December 25 will see party workers reaching out to senior citizens to get them registered with it while March 8, which is International Women’s Day, will see focus on women members.

The party is also planning to organise “membership festival” in states so as to woo more and more members.
