Hyderabad High Court protects Andhra Pradesh farmers’ rights

Decade-old case was not dealt fairly: Court
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court has come to rescue of several farmers of Chittoor district, who have been fighting for ryotwari patta since several decades.
Justice S.V. Bhatt allowed a petition by Ms Susheelamma and others challenging the orders passed by the Commissioner of Appeals. He found fault with the order of the settlement officer and the Special Commissioner and director of settlements of AP, who had rejected their claims to grant pattas to the lands, which are under their possession as per Section 11(a) of the Andhra Pradesh (Andhra Area) Estate (Abolition and Conversion into Ryotwari) Act, 1948.
The petitioners are fighting for the lands situated in Karkambadi village of Chittoor district, which was an Inam Estate. The settlement officer rejected their claim in 1975 showing lack of documentary evidence to prove that vendors of the lands to the petitioners’ were not the proprietors of the village.
The judge said the petitioners’ case was not considered in a fair manner and directed the joint collector of the district to dispose of the claim positively within a period of two months
