It’s the age of mockumentary
Cyrus Sahukar talks about his webseries, The Bench
Hyderabad: When Cyrus Sahukar’s interview with Karan Johar, where KJo was promoting My Name Is Khan, went viral last month, people had thought that it was an old clip that had surfaced now.
Not many were aware that this was part of Cyrus’ new web series, The Bench, a venture of Rhea Kapoor’s production house, Humble Pie. Its next episode, where Farah Khan was promoting Tees Maar Khan, went viral too.
Talking about the show, Cyrus, who was in the city to host an event at a pharmaceutical company, says, “Me, my show’s director Karan and Rhea were thinking of a new show format, that’s how The Bench happened. It’s an offbeat show… I won’t call it a spoof, it’s more like a mockumentary… it’s satirical.”
Talking about why celebs were promoting old movies on the show, he says, “We wanted to create a series about a show that never released. We wanted it to have a sense of history.”
Many had thought that it was an old interview that was taken in 2010, when the movie released. “That’s exactly what we wanted. In the show, we depict the year 2010, when My Name Is Khan had released.
When the interview was released this October, many of my friends thought that it was an interview that’s been leaked and were really worried about me.” Cyrus also informs that the show is scripted and a lot of research and creativity goes behind each episode, after which they spend time rehearsing before starting the shoot. He adds that future episodes will have politicians as well.
After Alia Bhatt, a lot of B’town celebs were seen not having any issues making fun of themselves on an Internet-based chat show. Asked if he thought Bollywood was now open to mockumentaries, Cyrus says, “I believe that it is a wonderful movement; it gives the artistes and the creators the freedom to do something that they can’t do on TV.”
Before wrapping up, he says, “I used to visit Hyderabad very often since my sister used to stay here. Now just professional commitments bring me to the city. But every time I come, I don’t miss out on Hyderabadi food.” Cyrus also adds that he is hoping to get married by next year.
