When a bunch of models led by Cara Develange paraded blanket wraps for the Burberry Prorsum catwalk this August, the moment heralded a major fall trend. And it didn’t take long for Kate Moss to convert ramp style into real fashion. She was seen flaunting the casually wrapped blanket during many of her outings.
With top-notch fashionistas endorsing this trend, fashion gurus have declared a “blanket call” for A/W 2014.
This season, you simply cannot miss wrapping up in style. Designer Delna Poonawala calls wraps “an effortlessly easy chic look that’s wonderfully versatile and stylish form of dressing.”
“Light wool fabrics and knit falls can be beautifully draped in winter months. Cooler linen and cotton viscose mixes can be used in warmer weather. Sheer wraps or embellished ones are perfect for the party season. A scarf or super sleek pashmina in print guarantees understated glamour. Another option is to add some bling by accessorising it with a huge cuff or a ring,” suggests the designer.
There’s another A/W stunner the cape. Silk crepe, crepe wool, cashmere, satins, chiffon are the most sought after material for wraps and capes, says designer Pria Kataria Puri. “Neutral and bold solid colours are having a better day than prints. However, if you are fond of prints, go for geometric prints in bold lines and checks as well as feminine floral prints in a burst of colour. A cape has the potential to give a new edge to a regular style. If you are not looking in the direction of the poncho you are letting an ‘it’ trend slip by,” points out the designer.
Capes and wraps can balance an outfit, or tone it down. “A top over which you throw on an asymmetrical wrap in an interesting print or embroidery details adds a fresh look to a boring outfit. Solid neutral colours can be worn over different tops. You can wear the same wrap over a bodycon one day and with tights and boots the next day, add a scarf or an interesting accessory for a night out,” says Delna.
Designer Shantanu Goenka adds, “Roberto Cavalli’s monochrome poncho line made a strong statement in the A/W 2014-15 style file. Contrasting borders come as an added appeal. For some more innovation, go for long fringes on the hemline or settle for a jazzy belt.
