WhatsApp helps rescue elderly woman
CHENNAI: An 85-year-old woman was rescued by the 108 ambulance service through information received via WhatsApp on Saturday. The woman who was found in poor health by the roadside in West Krishnappa Gramani street in Korukkupet and was photographed by a passerby. The picture was shared on WhatsApp, seeking help. Within a few hours, she was rescued from the roadside and admitted to Stanley medical college Hospital.
The police personnel who saw the message took necessary action to rescue her. “At 5.54 pm, we received a call from the police control room about an old woman lying in a bad condition at Korukkupet. Our ambulance service reached her and we admitted her to the hospital,” said B. Prabhudoss, regional manager of GVK-EMRI.
K. Abayambika, who received the call, reached the spot and identified the woman lying near some garbage at Korukkupet. She said the woman identified herself as Amitha and was hungry. Amitha was taken to the general ward and fed at the hospital while the local police found who her relatives were and the police and hospital team together united her with her family.
Early this year, another migrant worker, Hari Nayak, who was in an unconscious state, was rescued by the ambulance service and his relatives found through his pictures shared on Facebook.
