ISL: Delhi Dynamos eye top 4 spot in points table
With 13 points in their kitty, they are at the fifth place
New Delhi: Delhi Dynamos manager Harm van Veldhoven was a confident man on Monday, the eve of their final home game in the inaugural Indian Super League against Atletico de Kolkata.
Delhi, who were at the bottom of the points table not too long ago, have struck form in recent matches and find themselves in contention for a spot in the semi-final play-offs.
With 13 points in their kitty, they are at the fifth place, two behind FC Goa and Kerala Blasters FC who lie third and fourth, respectively.
The Dynamos now need to win at least two of their remaining three league matches, beginning with the formidable Atletico on Tuesday. It should be a tough affair for the hosts, but the improved form has given Veldhoven hope.
“We are going for a win tomorrow. The team are playing better and better. So we are looking forward to tomorrow’s game. We are two points behind the fourth placed team, so we have to win,” Veldhoven said after a practice session here on Monday. “It is going to be difficult, but sometimes you have to do difficult things.”
Skipper Hans Mulder has played a crucial role in the Delhi midfield. Danish striker Mads Junker, Brazilian centre forward Gustavo dos Santos and wingers Steven Dias and Shylo Malsawntluanga have also done well.
If they can maintain the form they displayed during the 4-1 drubbing of Mumbai FC in the previous match, the hosts could be a handful for the Atletico back four. “Atletico are good but if we can keep the ball on the ground and play short passes, we can trouble their defence,” Veldhoven opined.
The visitors, meanwhile, have struggled off late. Having started the tournament with a bang, the lack of bench strength combined with the hectic schedule saw them slip to the second spot.
The forwardline has been a bit over-dependent on Ethiopian striker Fikru Tefera at times, who has seen the goals dry up after starting the campaign on a promising note.
Skipper Luis Garcia will be key along with fellow Spanish midfielders Borja Fernandes and Jofre. Czech left-winger Jakub Podany and Spanish striker Arnal Llibert can also be effective.
Among the Indian forwards, the toss-up will be between Baljit Sahni and Mohammed Rafi as Cavin Lobio is out with injury.
