As perfect as a rose
Growing a rose plant is a challenge; it’s like rearing a baby
Hyderabad: “Growing a rose plant is a challenge; it’s like rearing a baby,” says Hyderabad-based Ahmed Alam Khan, president of the Indian Rose Federation and vice-president of the World Federation of the Rose Societies, who recently organised the 3rd Regional Convention of World Federation of Rose Societies (Central Asia).
“The roses need insecticides, pesticides, manure, the right amount of water to grow in a healthy manner; you have to prune them from time to time, make sure they are protected from natural elements etc. Other than that, roses also require nitrogen, which fuels their growth, phosphorus and potassium,” explains Khan, who grew 30,000 rose bushes in his Vikarabad farmhouse for the show.
“It took me four and a half months to get the rose bushes ready. Since not many Indian delegates could transport the roses and have them in the best shape for the show, I lent my farm for them to use,” he adds.
The winners of the event were Ashish More from Pune, Ahmed Alam Khan and a garden maintained by the Kolkata government. Ashish More has been growing roses for the past 15 years and is a regular participant at major rose shows across the country. “This is the third time I have won such a title,” says Ashish, a horticulturist by profession, who spends a couple of hours daily looking after the roses in his farm.
