Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University to put degrees online
Prospective employers can check certificates on the Web for authentication
Hyderabad: Degrees awarded to students by the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University will now be available online for firms to cross check for authenticity. The move is in the context of the increasing use of fake degrees and certificates by undeserving candidates to land jobs in companies.
University officials also said that all certificates issued by the JNTU-Hyderabad would have the Web portal address informing employers to check online for authenticity. Other universities in the state are also expected to join the system soon.
Nasscom, the umbrella body for IT firms, had approached Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao asking him to take steps against the menace of fake certificates. He had asked officials to put up genuine certificates online for firms to crosscheck.
The Web portal is now up and running, allowing firms to check the authenticity of the credentials of prospective employees. “IT companies had also asked the police to control this menace, but they can arrest one group or two groups but such a system will kill all the fraudulent gangs as the undeserving candidates will be dissuaded,” said JNTU-H Registrar Dr N.V. Ramana Rao.
He added that certificates to be issued in the future would have the details of the portal. Telangana State Council of Higher Education will be the nodal agency for this system.
“Any company can check the authenticity of a candidate and it will be done fast, so even the candidates will not have to suffer. We will give the details of all certificates so companies can check the authenticity of the candidates they are hiring,” said Dr Ramana Rao.
However, the public will not be able to access the system. Other universities in the state are also expected to join the system soon, uploading their records of degrees. “There is a debate on whether universities should upload details of the last 10 years or five years etc. It will be done,” Dr Ramana Rao said.
