Hindi film in Oscars, but not from India

Actress Rekha Rana talks about her Oscar nominated film and more
Mumbai: This year, Liar’s Dice is India’s entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category. But there’s another Hindi film that has made it to the race Tara: The Journey of Love & Passion. The film has been sent by Togo, in Africa.
The little-known Hindi film on a woman’s fight against prejudices in her village has received accolades world-over in several film fests since 2013. And so has its leading actress Rekha Rana, who is in Hyderabad.
“The presenter of the film, Hanubhai Sangani, is from Togo. The film was first screened at the Togo Film Fest and then shown to the Togo president, Faure Gnassingbé, and he loved it,” says Rekha.
Lately, her manager’s phone hasn’t stopped ringing. “Producers, directors are calling to ask how we managed to send it to the Oscars. Slumdog Millionaire was based in India, but it wasn’t India’s entry to the Oscars, it was the UK’s. So, the means can be different and this should be explored.”
Meanwhile, the actress will start shooting for Yahan Ameena Bikti Hai. “It’s about a 15-year-old girl from Hyderabad who’s sold to an Arab by her family. It’s based on a play of the same name, written by Aftab Hasnain,” says Rekha, adding that the film will be shot in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Dubai and Togo.
