Security beefed up at Narayanapura dams
Kalaburgi: Security is being beefed up at the reservoirs in Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts following the recent bomb blast in Bengaluru that claimed a woman’s life.
A Rs 2.15 crore plan has been drawn up to install CCTV cameras and other equipment at the Basava Sagar dam site in Narayanapura, according to Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Limited(KBJNL) executiv engineer, S Rangaram.
The Basava Sagar Reservoir, located downstream of the Alamatt, irrigates around six lakh hectares in Kalaburgi, Vijayapura, Yadgir and Raichur districts.
“Besides the main entrances, the CCTV cameras will be installed at all the 30 crest gates. We also plan to install PTG cameras that rotate 360 degrees to capture everything in their view,” the officer added.
Plans are also afoot to up the deployment of police around the dams. “Besides 27 ex-servicemen who will provide round the clock vigil, a team of police personnel from each of the three districts, Yadgir, Raichur and Bagalakote, will provide security to the reservoir on a rotational basis,” he said, adding that a team of KBJNL staff would also do night patrolling carrying high mast lamps that rotate 360 degrees.
Private security agencies will meanwhile up the security at the Bennethora, Amarja and Gandori Nala dams in Kalaburgi district, according to chief engineer of the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited, Devaraj.
“This arrangement will continue till the government deploys its own security force on the lines of the industrial security force of the government of India for manning dams and reservoirs,” he explained.
