Nagarjunasagar water sharing: Power generation may be hit in AP
Vijayawada: The dispute between the two Telugu states over water has been solved for the moment but it may hit power generation in AP as the NTTPS and the Kondapalli 1760 MW power station depend on Krishna waters.
Nearly 12 feet water is necessary at the Prakasam Barrage for power generation. Now the water level has fallen to 10.5 feet at the Prakasam Barrage while there is only 3 TMC feet of water at the Pulichintala project.
The NTTPS officials have identified the problem and estimate that it will rise after a month. They are also studying past records to overcome the problem. The officials are now making plans to use lifts for getting water from the Krishna although the water level is below 12 feet. As per estimations, the water problem would intensify after a month.
Actually, water reserves are below 3 TMC feet at Pulichintala and nominal at Nagarjunasagar and at Srisailam.
On the other hand, the governments have also decided to release water for irrigation.
Meanwhile, as per estimations, nearly 10 TMC feet of water is required for drinking purpose during the summer in the Krishna delta.
Given these facts maintaining 12 feet water level is difficult, says NTTPS chief engineer Ravi Prabhakar Rao.
The generation unit might face problems after a month, he said, and added that they would analyse past records to tackle the problem.
