It’s a perfect return to film
Papanasam will not be only about Kamal Haasan, but Gauthami too
Gauthami is returning to the silver screen with Papanasam, the Tamil remake of Drishyam, partnering Kamal Haasan. And it has been a gap of almost 20 years.
A minute into the conversation and it is clear that the pretty, bubbly, sizzling Chikku bukku chikku bukku raile persona she assumed was just that, a role she played memorably. Here now is a woman of substance, one who has faced cancer with courage, and a caring mother.
So, how was it to be back in the arc lights after 19 years? “Fantastic. Acting alongside Kamal is the one thing that made my comeback perfect,” she says. She had seen Drishyam and liked it.
She also took up the role in Papanasam because she understood that the filmmaker was sure that she was the right person for it. “So if directors find that there is a role that I should do, I am always in,” Gauthami adds. “The role should be one that challenges me — not just somebody’s mother or sister. It should be a meaty one and integral to the movie,” she says.
And as for her daughter’s plans to enter the film industry, she quickly interjects, “No, she is still in school, and has a long way to go before she even decides what she should pursue in life.”
The actress however does not hesitate though to dwell on her having braved cancer. And she points out how women should be sensible about caring for themselves.
“Most cancers are completely treatable if caught in time. So don’t run away from going for a test. Prevention is better than cure. Eat healthy and stay fit. Eat for your future and your body, not out of momentary cravings or greed.”
Those who are disheartened or entangled in financial, personal, emotional or health problems, thinking that the world has ended, are wrong, according to her. It’s great just to be breathing and have a tomorrow to look forward to, according to her.
“The battle is in the mind, and if one is ready to fight spiritedly, there is a fair chance of winning than in cribbing about one’s fate. Miracles happen when there is a positive attitude,” Gauthami says, from what seems like a vantage point of personal victory.
