Ennore Port to make good use of 700 acres of land

The port primarily handles the import of coal
Chennai: The Kamarajar Port Limited (formerly Ennore Port Limited) has proposed to make effective use of about 700-odd acres of vacant land currently available with it.
KPL’s management has appointed a Bengaluru-based professional consultant firm for drawing up a ‘land use plan’. According to KPL officials, the report, upon the basis of which land will be allocated for various commercial projects, is due within the next two or three weeks.
“The report will mark out zones for various potential sectors. We can then proceed to the next step of sounding out the interested parties,” a KPL official said. He further added that the land could be utilised for purposes like storage warehouses.
As the first stage of its proposed land usage strategy, the port had, some time ago, held preliminary discussions with its users and solicited their suggestions.
Ennore, one of the 12 major ports in the country and the first corporate port, has about 1,000 acres of surplus land of which about 700 acres could be allocated for viable projects, officials say. Set up in 2001, the port primarily handles the import of coal, intended for generating electricity at the thermal power plants in the state.
