WC 2015 NZ vs WI: Martin Guptill can thank one man for World Cup double-ton
Mumbai: Martin Guptill registered his name in the record books after slamming a big double-hundred against West Indies during the quarterfinal clash of World Cup 2015 in Wellington on Saturday.
The New Zealander became the second man after Chris Gayle to notch up a 200-plus score. And while at it, also broke Gayle’s record to become the highest run-scorer in an innings in the World Cup.
While the world is praising him for his mighty 237, which came from 163 balls and included 24 fours and 11 sixes, this would not have been achieved without one man. If one thought it is was due to one of his batting partners Taylor, Williamson, McCullum, Ronchi or Elliort or even his coaches, they might be wrong.
The man who made this record-breaking innings possible is Marlon Samuels, who dropped Guptill in the first over of the innings, when Guptill had not even opened his account.

And this is not the first time when a West Indian had dropped a player who had scored a double-ton. If one can remember, Darren Sammy had spilled a sitter when India’s Virender Sehwag went on to score 219.
The incident took place in the 38th over and when Sehwag was on 171. While Ravi Rampaul and his fellow West Indian teammates could not believe their eyes, Sehwag remained least bothered about the happenings.
Watch it from 6.05 to 6.37 minutes:
However, Virender Sehwag was not the only Indian who had been lucky. Rohit Sharma enjoyed a stroke of luck when Thisara Perera dropped an absolute dolly at the third-man during India vs Sri Lanka's tie at the Eden Gardens. Rohit, who opened the innings for India after making a comeback to the side following an injury, was batting on 4 then. What happened from thereon, is history.
