No more 18-hour shoots for me: Narayani Shastri

Narayani Shastri who stars in Life OK’s new show Piya Rangrezz talks about her role as Bhanvri Devi, a godmother who rules her village with an iron fist.
What made you take up this role?
Dominant by nature, Bhanvri Devi single-handedly runs an illegal alcohol business. I haven’t played a role like this before. I feel variety is what keeps the spice alive. Besides, I have grown out of saas bahu shows, so when I read this script, I knew I had to do it without second thought.
How did you prepare for the rustic avatar?
For me, it is very easy to act in a certain way, according to the script’s demand. I can adapt to speaking in different tones — whether it is as a sophisticated woman or a villager. I can get into the skin of the character. The avatar of a don was no easy task, but when I started shooting, I went with the flow.
The promo reminds one of Ammaji from Na Aana Is Des Laado…
My character does not resemble Ammaji’s character. Ammaji’s character is an iconic one and anything that has a village background and involves a woman who rules, gets invariably compared to Ammaji. Bhanvri Devi loves her people.
She is there in the wee hours of the morning when a woman has to deliver a baby. Such is her love for the people of her village.
Why were you been away from TV for a while?
I wanted to do something that was different. I was offered roles, but I wanted something new to put out there, and those didn’t come by. I knew I wanted to do something that was worth my time. I cannot do hectic 18-hour shoot schedules like I did before. Now I want to work for limited hours and do quality work.
