Mission Nepal cut short, but successful
Family members wanted Veerender Goud home after the second quake struck Nepal
Hyderabad: Telugu Desam leader Veerender Goud, who was in Nepal earlier this week to help with relief work in the wake of the devastating earthquake that left thousands dead, is back in Hyderabad.
Goud and his group had travelled to Baramchi in Nepal, helping villagers by feeding them twice a day. While the original plan was to stay on for about 15 days, the group was forced to leave after the second quake struck.
“We were pretty close to the epicentre and relief authorities said that this might keep happening,” said Goud adding, “Even if they wanted to evacuate us, it would be a little difficult because we did go into a pretty remote area and to pick up 15 people is not a small task.”
Concerned family members back home also forced Goud to return. “People in India were really tensed and wanted us to come back,” he said, adding, “There were 14 others with me and I was responsible for all of them. They were confident and said that they could handle it, but their families weren’t agreeing and were panicking, so I wanted to get them back as soon as possible.”
The mission, however, was successful, with the volunteer group, Nepal Round Table, picking up from where they left. “The Nepal Round Table is now working to run the camp continuously because we already had the supplies and everything required for the next 10-12 days,” Goud said adding, “People wanted us to distribute the materials before we left, but the Round Table said what we had been doing was absolutely right. People were coming to our camp with tiffin boxes in the morning, taking the food, and again coming back at night, which is exactly what we wanted.”
