Kamarajar Port Limited plans to use unutilised lands

Usage of unused land worth over Rs1.5 crore per acre will help port earn extra revenue

Chennai: The Kamarajar Port Limited, formerly Ennore Port, plans to rake in some extra revenue by making effective use of its unutilised lands. The port is currently in possession of unused lands measuring about 1,392 acres, worth over Rs1.5 crore per acre. A draft comprehensive plan for the unutilised lands, drawn up by a Mangalore-based consultant, was recently uploaded on the port’s website.

“A board meeting of the port is scheduled for later this month, where a final call on the submitted land plan will be discussed,” said a senior port official. While a majority of lands has been allocated for creating additional storage facilities for cargoes such as liquid substances, land had been earmarked also for storing coal and iron ore.“A detailed project report is also being prepared for the 100-acre Free Trade and Warehousing Zone that seeks to augment the import/export potential of Ennore port,” the official said.

Another 100 acres have been allocated for creating a logistics park, which the official noted, would be really beneficial to both the major ports. “Currently, the Chennai Port has congestion problems and as a result, containers being handled by them could be stored in our logistics park thereby freeing up their space. The containers could then be transported by rail,” he said. Significantly around 40 acres of land have been marked for commercial activities, to be given to interested parties through a tender process.
