Tanmay Dubey’s debut novel Just Six Evenings is a tale of love
Hyderabad: An IT professional based in Gurgaon, Tanmay Dubey’s debut novel Just Six Evenings is a tale of love, lust and ambition in a corporate India that shines at the expense of the dreams it tramples under its feet. Apart from his passion for writing, Tanmay is also an enthusiastic cyclist, a randonneur and loves running marathons. We catch up with the author for a quick tête-a-tête.
The best opening line in a book that you have read?
“Whether I turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show” — Charles Dickens, David Copperfield.
Which genre are you drawn to — as a reader and as a writer?
I simply adore thrillers and murder mysteries. My second book is a thriller and third will be a murder mystery involving international espionage.
A fictional character close to your heart, and why?
Phantom, by Lee Falk. As a kid, the character fascinated me and still inspires me. He gives you everything that a hero can. He is a mystery (a man who never dies); fights for poor and underprivileged (a saviour of African tribal community); he is charismatic (woos a beautiful girl); a caring father (has two lovely children) and has machismo (rides a horse and has loyal friends) and fights with bare hands!
Who among the pantheon of writers (past/present) would you like to have coffee with?
I would love to have a coffee with Dan Brown.
Which book do you keep revisiting?
Geeta Darshan (Commentary on Bhagwad Geeta by Osho).
What is your antidote for writer’s block?
I love to run. It clears my mind and fills it with new ideas. I also read a lot to keep my mind fertile. I believe in ‘art emulates life and life emulates art’.
How can budding writers prevent rejection from turning into dejection?
Life is all about trying and improving. Every rejection tells you to improve and forces you to the next best option. One should take rejections positively and approach the next avenue with a stronger commitment.
