No idea on Dhoni biopic but Azhar is coming out next year: Emraan Hashmi
Mumbai: Balaji Films and MSM proudly announced release date of their highly anticipated biopic ‘Azhar’ based on the life and times of former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin. The film will release on May 13, 2016 and will see Emraan Hasmhi essay the role of the former Indian captain in the Tony D’souza directed film.
The team unveiled a special ten-second promo on Thursday. The event was graced by the presence of Emraan Hashmi, and Mohammad Azharuddin, director Tony, producers Ekta Kapoor and Sneha Rajani.
Emraan expressed his delight to be apart of the project and even recalled how the cricketer first influenced him when he was in class 7.
He said, “I remember when I was in 7th standard something very unusual and weird happened. The kids from school, my friends, when we used to go out and play cricket in the sports break. We obviously were very passionate about cricket, and when we came back to the classroom we got scolded by the teachers because everyone for some reason had started putting their collars up. And there's this one man to be blamed for that. Azhar Bhai.”
“Twenty years after that I get a call from Ekta saying that they're planning a movie on the life and times of Mohammad Azharuddin and I yelled and I screamed. This is the best day of my life for me to play him. After that there was panic there was nervousness because here's a man who has been celebrated, who has been minutely seen under the microscope by everyone in our country for over 30 years and it's a huge task but our team is very excited.”
The cricketer himself was also very excited about the biopic and was glad to see Emraan portray him on screen. He said, “I think he's very apt for the role. He's worked very hard for the role. A lot of people have asked me why Emraan Hashmi. He's been my favourite actor also. I've watched all his films and I think he's very apt for the role. After he does the film, I think he will be called Azhar.”
When asked about the challenges he faced while prepping for the big film, Emraan said, “There were a lot of challenges. The first thing was he has a very unconventional cricketing style and I'm just an average galli cricketer I had no footwork. But when Azhar bhai showed me the footwork, I realised I have a lot to learn in cricket. I've gotten slightly better over the past three months. But his leg glance I still have to polish that. It's been three months now and we pretty much play 50 overs everyday, constantly in the nets, constantly whacking the ball but we'll get it. We have to get it before the shooting starts.”
The actor has also given up weight training for the time being and has begun yoga to perfect his wrist movements before the film goes on floors next month.
Biopics seem to be the flavour of the season. With ‘M S Dhoni’ another cricket biopic emerging, Emraan was asked if he fears he will have tough competition. To which he replied, “Firstly, I had no idea about this other film. But I do know that Azhar is coming out on May 13 next year.”
The film will highlight three major aspects of Azhar’s life, his struggle, his personal life and the match-fixing allegations. While it has already been finalised that Prachi Desai will play Azhar’s wife Naureen, the actress to play Sangeeta Bijlani is yet to be finalised. There were numerous reports that Jacqueline Fernandez has been roped in to play the role of Bijlani. However Ekta Kapoor denied the rumours and said they have considered a couple of actresses but nothing has been finalised as of now.
