Lilly Singh: Superwoman of laughter
Hyderabad: Her vlogs and videos have made her an international celebrity. Yet, when you spot Lilly Singh aka Superwoman there are no airs about her. As she entered her show venue here in Hyderabad, she stopped the bouncers, and took a moment to capture her venue on camera. The Canada-based YouTube star’s tour “A trip to Unicorn Island” is brought to India by the digital media company Culture Machine. When she announced the sale of tickets in India, most were sold out in eight minutes. “The energy and excitement here is high,” said Lilly.
When you ask her the difference between a comedy video and a stand-up performance, she said, “There’s no space for mistakes. Also, when you are a YouTube artiste, you focus on the numbers and sometimes forget they are people. Here, there are 1,200 people right in front of you, laughing.”
Talking about the ideas for her videos, she said, “Ideating is the main part. I need to think of an idea that will not just create excitement, but most importantly, be relatable.”
Making YouTube videos, keeping in mind people’s nasty comments, can be risky. Lilly said, “The truth is you can’t make everyone happy. Even when I made a video that was titled ‘10 reasons to smile’, some people disliked it,” she says.
Lilly is based in Canada but has fans in India, and that includes stars too. On an earlier visit, she was invited to Shah Rukh Khan’s house and Madhuri Dixit starred in one of her videos. “Even I’m boggled by it every time. When I had received the mail about ‘being invited by SRK’, my manager was like: ‘You mean Mr Khan?’”, she laughed and added, “They know me as their kids have seen my videos. Nargis Fakhri is a friend and she was supposed to come for my Mumbai show, but she couldn’t make it,” she said. Do we see her in Bollywood? “Not yet, but if something comes my way, why not,” she said.
Talking about Hyderabad she said, “I had been warned that it’s going to be hot. Hyderabad has this old world charm and is different from all the cities I have been to in India.”
Giving a word of advice to all enthusiasts, she said, “I got into the entertainment industry, because I didn’t want a nine to five job. Now, I have a 24X7 job. So, my advice would be, get into this field only if you are can devote that much time.”
