Hyderabad: The police has launched ‘Operation Late Night Roam-Yos’ to check youths roaming aimlessly on the roads of the old city at night causing disturbance. The operation’s focus is on youngsters and minors. The operation was launched as a minor was killed recently in a street fight in the area. Police said the operation was launched as a large number of youngsters and minors were wasting time on the roads and getting addicted to vices instead of focusing on academics and careers.
Police said the special drive was initiated to protect the future of the youngsters by preventing them from engaging in activities which can lead them to crime. During the early hours of Saturday 10 police teams intercepted about 282 ‘roam-yos’ including 32 minors who were roaming on the streets causing disturbance from Charminar, Khilwath Tegalkunta, Jangammet, Engine Bowli, Chandrayangutta, Talab-katta, Santoshnagar, Mada-nnapet, Hussainialam, Mirchowk and Reinbazar.
“We detained 282 youngsters for counselling and seized 12 bikes. The teams also raided the hookah centres at Chandrayangutta and registered four cases against them for operating beyond permitted timings,” said DCP V. Satyanarayana. South Zone additional DCP Babu Rao asked petty vendors not to run their businesses beyond the permitted hours.
Youths, parents counselled
The detained youths and their parents were called to Sana Function Hall and counselled. Both the youths and their parents were told about crime and its consequences and were let off. Parents also took an undertaking from their children that they would not engage in such activities. Police said the parents agreed that they are at fault and promised to keep tabs on their kids. Police said Nabeel was murdered due to the negligence of parents.
DCP V. Satyanarayana said some parents working in the Gulf showered too much affection on children but did not bother to check their activities. The children of NRIs were collecting money from parents and spending it on undesirable things, he said. Police said the parents expressed happiness at the initiative.
Officials said the operation will continue and will not inconvenience the public. Officials warned that cases will be booked against youngsters in future in repeat cases. Many residents of Charminar, Tigalakunta and Talabkatta had complained about youths roaming on the streets late at night.
